Navigating the Path to U.S. Citizenship: The Basics of the Naturalization Process

Naturalization is the process used to become a U.S. citizen if you were born outside of the United States. Becoming a U.S. citizen through the process of naturalization is a significant milestone that holds immense value and benefits. U.S. citizenship brings with it the power to vote, access to a wide array of government benefits, the ability to submit immigration petitions for additional family members, and greater protection from deportation.

Who is eligible?

In general, you may qualify for naturalization* if you:

· Are least 18 years old;

· Have been permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen) and have not left the U.S. for trips of 6 months or longer;

· Are a person of good moral character;

· Can demonstrate an understanding of the English language and the basic knowledge of U.S. history and government (there are limited exemptions available to this requirement); and

· Are willing to support and defend the U.S. and its Constitution by taking the Oath of Allegiance (applicants may request a modified oath or a waiver of this requirement).

How to Apply

The N-400 form, officially known as the “Application for Naturalization” is the key form required to apply for naturalization. The N-400 is a detailed questionnaire, which requires applicant to provide biographic information, employment history, travel history, and criminal background information, among other details. It is crucial to complete this form accurately and thoroughly, as any omissions or errors can potentially result in delays or complications in the process.
